01 / The design brief

Comfort on board.
Clarity in the yard.

Two sister wooden monohull phinisi for weekly cruising in the Komodo area. The programme calls for four decks, eight twin suites and two master suites, private balconies, and accommodation for an indicative crew of 22–24.

Guest comfort, low noise and vibration, upper-deck weight, and drawings usable by Bira craftspeople must be considered together from the outset.

Provisional working dimensions

Hull body length
≈45 m
Requested minimum working beam
12.4 m
Overall, including bowsprit
≈50 m

The working brief requests a minimum beam of 12.4 m, approx. 45 m hull body and approx. 50 m LOA. These are not approved technical dimensions. The designer must substantiate stability, scantlings, weight, draught and launch feasibility. Any smaller beam or changed programme requires an explicit written variation.

What the design must resolve

A practical starting point.

Proposals should demonstrate how the team will turn the programme into coordinated, verifiable design outputs.

01

Quiet hospitality

Propose measurable noise and vibration targets, machinery isolation, electrical loads and service systems. Hybrid propulsion is an option to assess, not an approved specification.

02

Weight and stability

Account for private balconies, upper-deck guest gathering, sky terrace, jacuzzi and tank free-surface effects in the weight ledger and stability work.

03

Buildable in Bira

Provide coordinated drawings, full-size templates and on-site plotting support that the yard and head craftspeople can use during construction.

02 / Design scope

Design, quantities
and supervision.

Offer a complete, itemised professional package. State responsibility, price, delivery period and acceptance evidence for every output, including BOQ and supervision. Disclose exclusions and dependencies.

01Programme & principal dimensions

LOA, LWL, beam, draught and depth, preliminary displacement and estimated gross tonnage.

02Final general arrangement

Four decks: suites, galley, crew spaces, machinery, tanks and tender arrangements.

03Lines plan & hydrostatics

Lines plan, hydrostatic tables and curves.

04Weight ledger, centre of gravity & intact stability

Lightship, full-load, upper-deck guest gathering, full jacuzzi and free-surface conditions; identify the calculation signatory.

05Timber scantlings & species schedule

Keel, frames, planking and deck beams; accepted and excluded species and moisture requirements.

06Gross tonnage & regulatory basis

Designer’s proposed NCVS and classification basis, applicable rule editions, submission drawings and authorised signatories. Requirements must be established by the designer; this page does not confirm approval.

07Propulsion & machinery

Engine, shafting, gearbox, thruster, fuel/water/waste tanks, machinery space and launch draught.

08Rig & sails

Masts, sail area and transfer of rig loads to the hull.

09Full-size templates & first-hull plotting

Yard templates usable by craftspeople, with attendance during plotting.

10Exterior 3D, general MEP & design schedule

Material for owner review and coordination with a separately appointed interior designer.

11Second sister hull

Drawing adaptations and plotting support for the second hull, priced separately.

12Construction supervision and acceptance checkpoints

At least three proposed Bira visits, with exact count and stage milestones, remote drawing responses, head-craftsman coordination, photo/evidence reports and snag closeout. Specify availability, who signs each inspection and whether travel, accommodation, additional visits and second-hull supervision are included.

13Option 0: launch-route opinion

Written opinion based on a measured shore profile: launch draught, method and launch weight.

14Bill of quantities and cost coordination

After appointment and sufficient design definition, deliver a versioned BOQ linked to drawings and specifications: units, net quantities, allowances/waste assumptions, material/specification references, vessel allocation and revision traceability. Identify who measures, checks and validates yard procurement quantities. Distinguish a quantity schedule from priced supplier quotations, taxes and a guaranteed construction budget.

BOQ and the itemised supervision plan are part of the requested professional package. Submit your scope and fee approach; a new design or BOQ is not requested free of charge before appointment. Interior design remains separately coordinated unless expressly offered.

Engagement target / subject to negotiation

An accountable
professional package.

The owner is targeting US$60,000 for the coordinated professional engagement. The allocation between two vessels, taxes, visits and travel basis must be confirmed in the written scope. This is an indicative owner budget, not an agreed supplier price, award or funding commitment.

01

Comparable commercial scope

Itemise each design output, BOQ, first- and second-hull services, signatories, review rounds, visit count, travel, taxes, payment milestones and exclusions. Explain any gap against the indicative target before a contract is considered.

02

BOQ follows the design

Propose the method, responsibility and design maturity needed for quantities. Quantities and yard allowances are checked against drawings; actual procurement prices and construction budget require separate evidence.

03

Evidence before acceptance

Define the reviewer and acceptance evidence for each deliverable and supervision milestone, including head-craftsman coordination, drawing revisions and unresolved issues. A file upload or completed status is not technical acceptance.

03 / Eligibility & evidence

Experience you can substantiate.

Provide evidence of the following experience and capability. Prequalification is non-binding; the timetable and contracting arrangements remain subject to confirmation.

  • A business or individual holding an Indonesian NPWP, with the preparer and signatory of stability and scantling calculations identified.
  • At least one phinisi of 40 m or longer with drawings submitted to KSOP/BKI and signed stability calculations, by the applicant or a named licensed partner.
  • Proven work alongside a named head craftsman / kepala tukang on a completed wooden phinisi. State the vessel, year, actual length and beam, your responsibilities, yard and reference evidence. Explain how that experience applies to the requested 12.4 m minimum working beam.
  • A commitment to an itemised Bira supervision plan, at least three proposed visits and full-size templates usable by the head craftsman.
  • Disclosure of current phinisi commitments and any previous relationship with the commissioning parties.

04 / Process & assessment

The same brief.
A transparent comparison.

After eligibility checks, proposals are assessed against the published K-1 criteria. Lowest price does not automatically determine selection.

How it is intended to work

  1. Expression of interest and eligibility information.
  2. Two-way NDA, then the same versioned information package for each eligible candidate.
  3. Written questions through the project enquiry channel; material clarifications shared with all candidates.
  4. Proposals opened together after the confirmed deadline; completeness and eligibility checks first.
  5. Independent scoring, comparable scope and cost review, reference checks and a 45-minute presentation.
  6. Written outcome to all candidates; appointment and payment only under the approved contracting process.

Use one versioned information package for all eligible candidates. Scope or timetable changes will be communicated uniformly.

Seven technical questions to address in your proposal
  1. What minimum hull body length do you recommend for 10 balcony suites over four decks with 22–24 crew, and why?
  2. How will you substantiate the requested minimum 12.4 m working beam for stability, appearance and wooden construction in Bira? Any smaller-beam alternative must be clearly identified as a proposed variation, not treated as compliant.
  3. What are the three leading risks from 10 private balconies and the sky terrace, and how would you control upper-deck weight?
  4. What gross tonnage do you estimate, and which regulatory thresholds or requirements need investigation?
  5. What quiet propulsion and generation approach would you propose, and is hybrid propulsion appropriate?
  6. What launch draught and method would you consider for the measured Bira shore, and what is your relevant launch experience?
  7. What changes for the second sister hull in drawings, templates and supervision?
